How Jacob Bethell’s Impressive Innings Couldn’t Save the Renegades in BBL 2024-25

Jacob Bethell’s impressive 50-ball 87 went to waste as the Melbourne Renegades fell to the Hobart Hurricanes, who celebrated their sixth consecutive victory in the BBL 2024-25 season. This defeat left the Renegades at the bottom of the points table, effectively eliminating them from playoff contention.

After being put in to bat, the Renegades found themselves in trouble early on, suffering a double blow from Riley Meredith in just the third over. With the score at 23/3 following the runout of Jake-Fraser McGurk, the Renegades faced a daunting challenge. However, Bethell stepped up, leading a recovery effort. He formed a solid 46-run partnership with Tim Seifert and then added another 41 runs with Will Sutherland. Bethell’s efforts helped guide the Renegades to a respectable total before he was dismissed in the final over.

In response, the Hurricanes didn’t have a single standout performer like Bethell, but they managed to chase down the target with consistent contributions from their batsmen. After slipping to 63/4 in nine overs, Nikhil Chaudhary provided a much-needed boost with his 36 runs off 27 balls during the middle overs, followed by Matthew Wade, who added 36 runs to the total. Although Adam Zampa kept the pressure on and brought the game down to the final over, Tim David hit a crucial six when eight runs were needed, helping the Hurricanes secure the win.

Brief Scores: Melbourne Renegades 154/7 in 20 overs (Jacob Bethell 87; Riley Meredith 3-36) lost to Hobart Hurricanes 155/6 in 19.4 overs (Matthew Wade 36) by 4 wickets.
