Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Hardik Pandya have all been included in India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The trio last played in the ODI format during the 2023 World Cup. The 15-man squad, announced on Saturday afternoon (January 18), will be captained by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill as his vice-captain. Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been included, marking his first call-up for an ODI match. The India squad for the Champions Trophy includes:
Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah*, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Harshit Rana will participate in the three-match series against England.
Bumrah’s selection depends on his full recovery from the back spasms he experienced at the end of India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During that campaign, he bowled an impressive 151.2 overs, taking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06. He is not expected to be fit for the start of the England series, so Harshit Rana will replace him for those matches. However, for the marquee tournament, Bumrah is anticipated to lead a fast-bowling attack that also includes the returning Shami, who was the top wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup but has been sidelined from international play after undergoing surgery on his left Achilles tendon. Arshdeep Singh rounds out the pace attack, with Mohammed Siraj not included.
India has a strong lineup in the all-rounder category with Pandya’s return, as he missed the latter part of the World Cup due to an ankle injury. Ravindra Jadeja, who last played ODIs 14 months ago, adds versatility with his left-arm bowling. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who were part of India’s recent ODI series in Sri Lanka, are the other all-rounders in the squad.India’s spin attack has received a significant boost with Kuldeep Yadav’s return to the squad after recovering from hernia surgery. The 30-year-old played only the first Test of the home series against New Zealand before being sidelined for the rest of the season due to a groin injury.
In the meantime, vice-captain Shubman Gill, who boasts an impressive average of 58.20 in this format, may find himself competing for his position at the top of the order. The selectors have opted to include Yashasvi Jaiswal as the other opening option. Jaiswal has made a strong start to his international career and adds a left-handed option to an otherwise right-heavy top order, although he has yet to make his international debut in this format. He does have a List A average of 54, with a top score of 203 against Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Among the wicketkeepers, India will continue to rely on KL Rahul, who performed exceptionally well in the last World Cup. Rishabh Pant, a left-handed batsman, is the other keeper-batsman in the squad.
India is placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. They will kick off their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Stadium. Additionally, they will play three ODIs against England next month in Nagpur (February 6), Cuttack (February 9), and Ahmedabad (February 12) as preparation for the marquee ICC event.
